Decision Letter
Appeal Number: 8118
Decision Date: September 27, 2021
Associate Dean: Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Student Name: John Caden Hodgson
Student Email: 17jcah@queensu.ca
Course: BCHM 317
Term: Fall/Winter
Year: 2021
Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline
Dear John Caden Hodgson:
I was sorry to read in your letter of appeal that you were unable to complete the requirements in BCHM 317 (Fall/Winter 2020/21) during the summer term as you had hoped and I have reviewed your appeal to drop that course after the academic deadline. After careful consideration of the information that you provided, I have decided to grant your request.
As noted in the previous decision letter sent, I have granted appeals related to 2020/21 based on the impact of your health-related extenuating circumstances but again need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition. Going forward, I am confident that you will evaluate the impact of your health on your studies during week 7 of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

John, I strongly encourage you continue to work with a health professional and to proactively manage the impact of our condition on your academics. As noted in my previous letter, if this is a chronic condition, please talk to your Physician about the possibility of registering with QSAS. A QSAS??Advisor??can help put into place appropriate accommodations to help you manage the impact of your health on your academics.??
Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
Yours sincerely,
Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
