Dear Claudia Mihalcea:

I was sorry to read in your letter of appeal the challenges you outlined, and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop POLS 110 (FW 2020/21) past the academic deadline, as well as receive credit standing in FREN 150 (FW 2020/21). After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. Your grade in FREN 150 will appear on your transcript as CR.

Claudia, I am also willing to drop CISC 101 (S 2021) based on the circumstances you outlined. If you wish to accept that offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter.

I have granted this appeal based on the circumstances outlined but I do need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing challenges or a chronic condition. The Appeal process is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. I encourage you to continue to work with your health professional and to proactively manage the impact of our condition on your academics. If this is a chronic condition, please talk to your counsellor about the possibility of registering with QSAS. A QSAS Advisor can help put into place appropriate accommodations to help with both your health and academics.

Going forward you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on our academics proactively and not after the fact via the appeal process. I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of the term and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in a course to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline. Please do not wait until you receive your grades and then request a drop for those that are failures.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by Week 8 is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Best of luck with your degree progression.

Yours sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
