Dear Yichen Zhao:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add MUSC 156, MUSC 210, MUSC 255 (F 2021) and ENGL 100 (FW 2021/22) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
1) To grant your request to add MUSC 156, MUSC 210 and MUSC 255 based on the input received from the instructors in these courses. Yichen, you must submit your vaccination declaration through the University portal. If that is not received asap, you will be deregistered from these courses. Here is the link to the portal: https://www.queensu.ca/safereturn/vaccination/declaration
2) To deny your request to add ENGL 100 (FW 2021/22). The instructor of this course was certainly sympathetic to your situation, but the work missed is foundational for the units to come in this course.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances?. Additionally, it is important that you not be too far behind in a course which would make catching up too difficult and put you in a situation where you would be unlikely to succeed.
The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
For your information, registration for our Summer term on-line courses began in November and I encourage you to review the course offerings during that upcoming term if you wish to try and catch up on your degree requirements. The on-line courses available can be found at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci_online/.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean??s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on ??Board of Studies?). You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities as well as guidance on policy and procedure (www.queensu.ca/ombuds).
Best of luck in the added courses.
Sincerely,
Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
