Dear Osarumwense Omoruna,
On October 18, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to receive Credit Standing (CR) in BCHM 310 (Fall/Winter 2019). Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Ivan Dimitrov (Faculty member), Scott-Morgan Straker (Faculty member) and Brandon Aldworth (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the current Acting Associate Dean (Academic), Jill Atkinson. Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Atkinson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal for Credit Standing in BCHM 310 (Fall/Winter 2019), finding her decision reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record.
In your presentation at the meeting, your letter of appeal and your note to the Board, as well as in your earlier submission to the Associate Dean that was included in the file, you reported impairing physical and mental health issues that affected your academic performance in BCHM 310 (Fall/Winter 2019). More specifically, you stated that your lower grade in the course was due to health disturbances experienced during the writing of the final exam in this course. Also included in the file were a note from a physician relevant to this period and two letters from a health professional attesting your mental health issues.
As we expressed it in the meeting, the Board recognizes the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced. However, we agreed with the Associate Dean that you were provided reasonable accommodation for BCHM 310 throughout the term and that your decision to take the deferred final while experiencing the exacerbation of your chronic health issues makes your exam a valid attempt. We also agree with the Associate Dean that your final grade is a fair representation of the learning outcomes you demonstrated in this course.
At last, I wish to emphasize that the Board recognizes the importance of this decision to you, and I want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal in our discussion.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, this is the last step in the appeal process for this matter, since your ability to progress to the next level is not affected by this decision.
