Dear Christina Holmes:
I am sorry to have read the challenges you reported in your letter of appeal and I understand that you are seeking Credit standing in ITLN 111 (S 2021) due to the impact those circumstances had on this course. After reviewing your appeal package, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.? Your final grade in ITLN 111 is a C which is above the range to normally consider CR standing. Additionally, the documentation you submitted does not cover the Summer term, and finally, the information we received from the instructor indicates that you had reached out to her noting that you were overwhelmed with work, which is not the same as being unwell.
Going forward, I recommend that you inform yourself of the academic regulations concerning deadlines as they are outlined in the Important Dates section on the Arts and Science web page and assess your progress in your courses prior to the drop deadlines. If you find that you have fallen behind in your attendance, readings or assignments, or are not happy with the grades earned in your courses by that date, it is your responsibility to drop courses by the deadline.
Additionally, I suggest you familiarize yourself with our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment, had to miss a class, or need to defer an exam due to documented extenuating circumstances. Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
