On Monday, November 8, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request for an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work or to Complete a Deferred Examination in PHAR 100, PHYG 215, and PHGY 216 (Summer 2020) and to deny your request to receive Aegrotat Standing (AG) in PHAR 370 and GLPH 385 (Fall 2020). This also included a memo to the Board from Acting Associate Dean (Academic) Jill Atkinson. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Scott-Morgan Straker (Faculty member), Ivan Dimitrov (Faculty member), and Alyth Roos (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all written submissions contained in the file, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeals, finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and the individual circumstances of your case.
In your letter of appeal to the Board and in your earlier submission to the Associate Dean that was included in the file, you reported health issues that affected your academic performance in PHAR 100, PHYG 215, and PHGY 216 (Summer 2020) and in PHAR 370 and GLPH 385 (Fall 2020). Also included in the file were notes from your doctors, the Toronto Eye Clinic and your Optometrist; a Disability Verification Form; as well as a letter where you self-reported your medical condition from the summer of 2020 to the spring of 2021.
The Board sympathizes with your situation. We empathize with the challenges you have had to overcome and wish you the best in your ongoing health difficulties. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that in all these courses you have been accommodated appropriately with multiple chances to complete outstanding components of the courses. As for your request to receive Aegrotat Standing (AG) in PHAR 370 and GLPH 385 (Fall 2020), the information received from your instructors indicates that you have not met the learning outcomes based on the work that you completed. In the case of GLPH 385 (Fall 2020), the Board considered that the email from Dr. Korczynski, dated May 11, stating that ??the student has NOT satisfied the learning objectives of the course?, took precedence over the email from Dr. Carver, dated May 25, 2021, which was not giving any specific information regarding the status of the work you have done relatively to the learning outcomes of the course.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
