Year: 2021
Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline

Dear Avery Herr:

I was sorry to read about the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal, some of which are related to COVID 19, and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop KNPE 225 (F 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances, but I need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing problems. The Appeal process is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. Instead, I would encourage you to continue to work with your health care professionals, including a counsellor from QSAS, to manage both your health and academics. This could include taking a lighter course load and would include evaluating the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term and dropping courses which are affected by your documented extenuating circumstances.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,
