On November 24, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jill Atkinson??s decision to deny your request to drop ARTH 215, ARTH 248 and ARTH 293 (Winter 2021) after the deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Tara MacDonald (Faculty member), Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (Faculty member), and Tiffany Yung (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all written submissions contained in the file, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal to drop ARTH 215, ARTH 248 and ARTH 293 (Winter 2021) after the deadline finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record.
In your letter of appeal to the Board and in your earlier submission to the Associate Dean that was included in the file, you reported health issues that affected your academic performance in the winter term of 2021. Also included in the file were notes from your doctor, namely a Verification of Personal Health Form dated September 10, 2021, and a note dated February 9, 2021.
The Board recognizes the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced in the winter of 2021. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that students are expected to adhere to university drop dates and not persist in courses in which they have fallen behind, even when their academic performance is affected by extenuating circumstances. In your case, it means that, given the symptoms you experienced until February 23, you could have reasonably dropped your winter term courses by the March 5th, 2021 deadline.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file. We would also like to reiterate the Associate Dean??s advice to consider registering with QSAS if your health issues require continued monitoring and support. Furthermore, we encourage you to repeat the courses you failed and remind you that only the best marks for these courses will count towards your GPA.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
