Dear Maya:

I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to waive the 21 day appeal deadline. Based on the circumstances outlined and the documentation provided, I will grant your appeal to waive the 21 day appeal deadline as well as grant your request to ??Waive the Requirement to Withdraw for One year?. You may resume your studies at Queen's University beginning Winter term 2022.

This decision was not made lightly Maya, but I was pleased to see that you have sought out help and will receive the support needed to aid you in your studies and health.

As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider:

?? Choose courses carefully. As you know, achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will mitigate the risk of being required to withdraw for three years when we next assess your transcript.
?? Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right courses or plan for your interests and aptitudes?
?? Seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
?? Continue to work with your health professional who can assist you in finding ways to cope with the challenges you have outlined. This may include registering in a lighter course load. In addition, the Student Wellness Services Centre located on the first floor of Mitchell Hall, 69 Union Street, offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

Going forward you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on your academics proactively and not after the fact via the appeal process. I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Please also read carefully the document which will follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
