I am sorry to have read about the challenges you been facing during the Fall term and have carefully considered your appeal to drop ECON 255 (F21) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I certainly empathize with your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however I want you to know that competing commitments such as sports are not considered to be an unexpected extenuating circumstance. With the absence of a documented extenuating circumstance beyond your control that confirms why you were not able to drop this course by the Academic Deadline, I cannot waive this regulation.
Going forward, you should pause to evaluate your progress in a course before the drop deadline of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should consider dropping the course. I also encourage you to connect with the Student Academic Success Services at https://sass.queensu.ca/. SASS provides a range of services including workshops and support to help improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life.
If you are concerned with the impact that this course will have on your GPA, I encourage you to consider repeating it in a future term. When a student repeats the exact same course, both attempts appear on their transcript but only the higher grade is included within their GPA.
