Dear Jennifer Hernandez:

I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your letter of appeal. No doubt this has been a difficult term and I will grant your appeal to drop PHIL 259 and MUSC 104 (F 2021) past the academic deadline based on the circumstances outlined and your documentation.

I was pleased to read that you plan to step back from your studies next term and focus on self-care. I encourage you to continue to work with health professionals as you manage the challenges you are facing. If your circumstances require ongoing accommodations in the future Jennifer, you may want to register with QSAS who can help support both your health and academics by putting in place appropriate accommodations so you can meet your course work requirements.

Going forward, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date, is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Yours sincerely,
