I was sorry to read of the challenges you reported in your letter of appeal and I have carefully considered your request to drop POLS 243, POLS 261 (F 2018); POLS 264 (W 2019); CLST 205 (S 2019); DEVS 230, GNDS 212, POLS 313 (F 2020); ENGL 321, POLS 483 (W 2021); GNDS 280, LLCU 325, POLS 211, POLS 327, POLS 434 (S 2021) as well as your request for Aegrotat standing in POLS 280 (F 2018); POLS 212 (W 2019) and POLS 404 (W 2021). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your appeal to drop POLS 243, POLS 261 (F 2018), POLS 264 (W 2019) and CLST 205 (S 2019). I recognize that you encountered challenges during that timeframe which impacted your courses after a solid start in first year.
2. To deny your request to drop DEVS 230, GNDS 212, POLS 313 (F 2020); ENGL 321, POLS 483 (W 2021); GNDS 280, LLCU 325, POLS 211, POLS 327, POLS 434 (S 2021) as well as your request for Aegrotat standing in POLS 280 (F 2018); POLS 212 (W 2019) and POLS 404 (W 2021). As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control. Third year students are expected to manage a chronic health issue by dropping courses by the deadline and determining by that point whether they are finding that their health is impacting their courses or work habits. Additionally, we cannot determine a student??s estimated achievement in courses taken in 2018/19 to decide Aegrotat standing.
3. Note that the appeal system is meant for requesting exceptions to the Arts and Science regulations. These regulations do not pertain to remote courses. For help choosing courses that fit your needs, please contact asc.registration@queensu.ca.
Going forward I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline. Tanisha, let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade is excluded from their GPA and the higher grade is included.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date is our Academic Consideration service. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
