Decision Letter
Dear Andrea,
I am writing to inform you that you have been required to withdraw from the Faculty of Arts and Science for a minimum of one year. As you know, David Freedman, Chair of USAB, emailed you on January 10, 2022 to inform you that your USAB appeal was dismissed. As this was the last level of appeal your requirement to withdraw for one year will be put into effect.
As you are currently in three full year courses the faculty is prepared to offer you two options for when to start your requirement to withdraw. You may opt to drop your current courses and withdraw effective January 1, 2022, or complete your winter 2022 term courses and start your requirement to withdraw beginning May 1, 2022.
If you choose to start your requirement to withdraw for 1 year as of January 1, 2022, you would be eligible to return to your studies beginning January 1, 2023. Because you will have attempted less than 18.0 units of courses over the fall and winter terms, your academic standing would not be assessed again the spring.
If you chose to start your requirement to withdraw for 1 year as of May 1, 2022, you would be eligible to return to your studies beginning May 1, 2023. Please note that if you take this option your academic standing would be assessed again spring 2022 and if your GPA remains below 1.6, you could be required to withdraw for a minimum of three years.
Students' academic standing is assessed at the end of the Winter Term each year, if they have completed a minimum of 18.0 units since the time of their admission to the Faculty of Arts and Science, or since the time of their previous assessment. Assessment of academic standing is based solely on the cumulative GPA.
Andrea, I know this is a lot of information to process, so I am happy to give you the opportunity of setting up a meeting with Haley Everson and myself to discuss your options and which would be the best one for you before you decide. If this is something you would like to do, please email me (asc.bos@queensu.ca) and we can set up a meeting. We need to be able to process your decision by January 21, 2022 as this is the drop deadline for courses and we want to ensure no additional fees are placed on your account. If you would like to meet, please let me know as soon as possible so we can schedule a time.
While away from Queen??s, it will be important for you to reassess your academic goals and educational plans. There are many resources at the University that can assist you with strategies to manage your academics on your return, including Academic Advisors in the Faculty of Arts and Science. I also encourage you to take some time to build a realistic academic plan. Students who are required to withdraw for a minimum of one year will not be allowed to transfer units from another post-secondary institution for classes taken while under a requirement to withdraw. Prior to taking a class or registering at another post-secondary institution, please consult an academic advisor in the Faculty Office who can confirm whether doing so would require you to apply for re-admission to Queen's.
