Dear Omar:
I am sorry to have read that you did not complete the mid-term exam in ECON 255 (F 2021) and I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat Standing in that course. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)?. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I do appreciate that there were extenuating circumstances around the time of the mid-term exam, but we do expect students to use the Consideration protocol, which you are familiar with, to defer course work and make alternate arrangements during the timeframe of the assignment they need consideration in.
Professor Zabojnik has advised me that if the current instructor of ECON 255 allows you to write the mid-term with the current winter term class on Thu March 3rd (4:00-5:30pm in Dunning 14), he would be willing to mark that mid-term and adjust your grade accordingly. If you wish to attempt that exam, please contact Dr. Ian Cromb (crombi@queensu.ca), Undergraduate Chair of the Department of Economics who can assist with this arrangement since Professor Auger is indeed willing to allow you to write that mid-term exam with his current class.
Going forward, I suggest that you carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or if your health is suffering, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
I also encourage you to make use of the Academic Consideration protocol which you are familiar with. As you know, a student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
