Dear Grace,
On March 3, 2022, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request for Aegrotat (AG) Standing in HIST 228 and POLS 440 (Fall 2021). Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Kai Salomaa and Scott-Morgan Straker (Faculty representatives), and Brandon Aldworth (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the current Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal for Aegrotat (AG) Standing in POLS 440, but to overturn her decision to deny your request for Aegrotat (AG) Standing in HIST 228, which means that for this course you will be granted AG.
The Board reviewed regulation 10.3.1 on Aegrotat standing which reads as follows:
Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course.
The Board agreed with the Associate Dean that you were experiencing extenuating circumstances beyond your control that impacted your performance in these two courses but had questions about your ability to complete all the work of the courses without compromising your mental health. We took into consideration your counsellor??s letter dated 10 February, which raised the possibility that an increase to your workload could compound the risk of returning to the condition you experienced in Fall 2021. We further took into consideration Professor Chowdhury??s assurance that you have met the learning outcomes for HIST 228. We therefore conclude that the risk of requiring you to complete the remaining work in HIST 228 outweighs any potential benefit, and that the conditions for Aegrotat (AG) Standing in this course have therefore been met.
In the case of POLS 440, because the work that you completed was principally formative and consequently that the learning outcomes of the course have not been met, the option of Aegrotat (AG) Standing could not be envisaged. For this course, we agreed with the Associate Dean that the only two remedial options are to drop the course after the deadline or to complete the outstanding work with her permission, as she is willing to grant you an extension of IN to the end of the summer term (until August 30). Please contact Pam Briand if you decide to take one of these two offers. If you choose to complete the work in the course, we also recommend that your contact the Undergraduate Chair of the Politics Department who could give you some academic support, in addition to your instructor.
In concluding this letter, we want to reiterate that this decision appears to us like the safest option in the circumstances as it is balancing your well-being and the integrity of the courses and of your record. We hope that your health continues to improve, and we would like to wish you every success as you pursue your educational and career goals.
