Dear Anna:

I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal the circumstances outlined which are somewhat COVID 19 related and I have carefully considered your request to drop SOCY 276, SOCY 300 and SOCY 309 (W 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

Going forward, a good practise for all students is to carefully evaluate your progress in courses during week 7 of the term and if you are struggling in your courses or unable to keep up with the course work, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Anna, I strongly encourage you continue to work with your health professional and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If your health issue is chronic in nature, please talk to your physician about the possibility of registering with QSAS. A QSAS??Advisor??can help put into place appropriate accommodations to help you manage the impact of your health on your academics.

I noticed that you have changed your degree program from a BAH Major in Sociology to a BA General in Sociology and suggest you meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss that change if you have not done so already. An Academic Advisor may be able to assist you with course planning and meeting degree requirements for that degree program.

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
