Dear Sylvia:
On Thursday May 12,2022 the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to drop MICR 360 (Fall 2021) after the academic deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Scott-Morgan Straker (Faculty member), Ivan Dimitrov (Faculty member) and Emma Farrell (Student representative)). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal to drop MICR 360 (Fall 2021) retroactively.
The Board recognizes the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced in the fall of 2021 and would like to offer their condolences to you for the loss of you uncle. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that students are expected to adhere to university drop dates and not persist in courses in which they have fallen behind, even when their academic performance is affected by extenuating circumstances. In your case, it means that your poor performance in the first mid-term, on October 20, was a clear indication that you were struggling in the course. Given that you received the result of your mid-term by November 1st, the date of the drop deadline, you had the opportunity to take the appropriate action of dropping the course without academic penalty.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file. Furthermore, we encourage you to repeat the course you failed and remind you that only the best marks for these courses will count towards your GPA.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here:

According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
