Dear Serena:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal and understand that these were difficult circumstances to deal with. I have carefully considered your appeal receive Credit standing in MUSC 104 and ANAT 100 (F 2021) as well as receive Aegrotat standing in PHGY 170 (F 2021). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your appeal for Credit standing MUSC 104 and ANAT 100 (F 2021). Your grade in these courses will appear on your transcript as CR.
2. To deny your request for Aegrotat standing in PHGY 170 (F 2021). The instructor has advised that you were not successful in both the mid-term exam and the final exam which is a demonstration that you have not met the learning outcomes in this course. Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)?. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control preventing them from completing the course within the term, or within an extended period of time, and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied.
I am however willing to drop PHGY 170 (F 2021) late based on your extenuating circumstances and the documentation you have provided. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
Going forward, I strongly suggest that you pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term. If you have fallen behind in your studies due to your health or other extenuating circumstances, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline date.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Serena, let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade is excluded from their GPA and the higher grade is included.

Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s University Senate approved appeal policies. If an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
