Dear Makayla:
I am sorry to have read of the challenges you reported during this academic year and I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat Standing in CHEM 112 (FW 2021/22) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60% of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6)?. Aegrotat standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control and the learning outcomes of the course have been satisfied.
Makayla, I am not clear why your circumstances would prevent you from completing the exam since Professor Mombourquette has advised that he is willing to let you complete a deferred exam in this course and has a duplicate of the paper exam available as an onQ quiz which he has offered to invigilate via zoom. I urge you to discuss that option with Professor Mombourquette directly or discuss with him the option of taking the exam with the summer term students.
Going forward, a good practise for all students is to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the drop deadline and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the course to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline. Please do not wait until you receive your grades and then request a drop for those that are failures.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
