Dear Jordan Chiabai:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in PHIL 117 (FW2021/2022). After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed all of the work of the course including the final examination, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower?. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling reasons indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond their control. An extenuating circumstance is defined as a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student??s control and debilitating to their academic performance. In general, an appeal would be successful when there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of an academic regulation.
I acknowledge that you were impacted with an extenuating circumstance during the December exam period however I want to remind you that you were accommodated appropriately by your instructor with a deferred exam date in January of 2022. I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision however, it is my understanding that you instead chose wrote the final exam on the originally scheduled December date despite the impacts of your extenuating circumstances.
If you are concerned about how this grade is affecting your GPA, I want to remind you that if a student repeats a course, both grades will appear on their transcript but only the higher grade will be included within their cumulative GPA.
