Dear Lilli:
I have read with interest your appeal to drop PHIL 260, PHIL 316 and PHIL 330 (F 2021), taking note of the challenges you outlined. After reviewing your appeal fully, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance and is supported with documentation.
I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision, however without documentation to support the circumstances you outline in your letter of appeal, I am unable to grant this appeal.
I have reviewed your transcript Lilli and I am concerned that your academics may have been impacted by extenuating circumstances during Fall term 2020, Winter term 2021, Fall term 2021 and now Winter term 2022 and I am not sure why you selected only Fall term 2021 to appeal for late drops since clearly you have been experiencing challenges for some time. I would strongly suggest that you discuss your challenges with an Academic Advisor who may be able to offer some suggestions for a future appeal and suggest support services who may be able to offer you some longer term assistance.
Lilli, as you should now know, you are currently ??Required to Withdraw for One Year? and I suggest that, if you decide to submit an appeal to ?waive the Requirement to Withdraw??, you ensure you meet with (via zoom at: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergrad-students/student-services/academic-advising/appointment-booking) an Academic Advisor and reach out to a health care provider who may be able to offer you support related to your challenges as well as provide documentation which demonstrates to me that you are seeking support.
Additionally Lilli, I am concerned that you are registered in three Summer term courses and I suggest you to carefully watch the drop deadlines. If you are falling behind in those courses, you should drop courses by that deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances.
