Dear Isabel:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Credit standing in PSYC 100 (FW 2021/22) and CLST 150 (W 2022). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request for Credit in CLST 150 (W 2022) based on your extenuating circumstances and since extenuating circumstances you outlined were during the Winter term.
2. To deny your request to receive Credit in PSYC 100 (FW 2021/22). As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.? The information I received from the instructor of PSYC 100 advised that you did poorly on the Fall term tests and failed the December mid-term, so this course was not particularly impacted by the circumstances which occurred during Winter term.
Going forward, I encourage you to pause and evaluate your progress in your courses during week 7 of term and if you have fallen behind or your health is impacting your progress, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Isabel, let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their GPA and the higher grade is included, which would mean there would be no long term negative impact on your GPA.

You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities as well as guidance on policy and procedure (www.queensu.ca/ombuds).
Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
