Dear Lily:
I have read in your letter of appeal your reported extenuating circumstances, and I have carefully considered your request for Credit standing in PHIL 257 (FW 2020/21) and FREN 118 (W 2022) based on those circumstances. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.? Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control, often which took place after the drop date deadline. In addition, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling circumstances and documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised beyond his or her control.
I am concerned Lily by your repeated appeals that are based on a chronic health condition which you report was diagnosed in 2019. You claim that your health condition became severe in Fall 2020 and Winter 2022 but an appeal is not designed to address chronic health issues. You should instead work with your QSAS Advisor if your circumstances are not being fully accommodated.
Also of note is that the input received from your FREN 118 instructor indicates that the grade you received is consistent with your progression in the course throughout the term and that there was no noticeable decline of your performance at specific times. The information received from your PHIL 257 instructors indicate a fairly consistent performance during both the Fall and Winter terms so a flare up of your challenges is not supported by the grades you earned in those courses.
Lily, let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the lower grade is excluded from their GPA and the higher grade is included.
Going forward, I suggest that you inform yourself of the academic regulations concerning deadlines as they are outlined in the Important Dates section on the Arts and Science web page and assess your progress in your courses or discuss your options with an Academic Advisor during week 7. If you find that you have fallen behind in your attendance, readings or assignments, it is your responsibility to drop courses by the end of week 8 each term.
I also suggest that you continue to utilize the various remedies available to you throughout the academic year to assist you and your studies, including QSAS and SASS.
