I was sorry to read of the circumstances you outlined in your letter of appeal. No doubt the passing of your friend was difficult, and I am sorry for your loss. Based on your circumstances, I will grant your appeal to drop POLS 465 (W 2022) past the academic deadline.
I encourage you to continue to meet with your coach, Ryan Bechmanis as needed. You may also want to consider connecting with a counsellor in Student Wellness Services who may be able to help you manage your grief. If you find that your circumstances require ongoing accommodations Owen, you can reach out to QSAS who can help support both your health and academics by putting in place appropriate accommodations so you can meet your course work requirements.
Going forward, a good practise for all students, is to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to week 7 and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in the courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding.
