Dear Beckham:

I am sorry to have read in your letter of appeal that you had a difficult Winter term 2021 and I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 203, CISC 204 and CISC 282 (W 2021) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this appeal based on the??documentation provided which notes that you were engaged in regular counselling sessions on a bi-weekly basis since March of 2021 and I do hope you have continued to work with health care professionals to manage your challenges. I am also pleased to see that you took time away from your studies last year to focus on your health and wellness.

Going forward, you will be responsible for managing the impact of your condition on your academics proactively and not after the fact via the appeal process. Should you resume your studies at Queen??s, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses prior to the week 8 drop deadline and if you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.

Another tool available at Queen??s to manage your academics, in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline, is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Here is the link for information about that process:

Beckham, I strongly encourage you continue to work with a health professional and to proactively manage the impact of your condition on your academics. If this is a chronic condition, please talk to your counsellor about the possibility of registering with QSAS if you return to Queen??s or look into the Accommodation Service at the university you may choose to transfer to as that office??can help put into place appropriate accommodations to assist you in managing the impact of your health on your academics.??

Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.

Best of luck.

Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
