Dear Sarah Cook:
I was sorry to read of the challenges you outlined in your letter of appeal. I have carefully considered your request to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year? and to drop SOCY 226 (F17), GNDS 215, SOCY 227 (W18), SOCY 226, SOCY 388 (F18), SOCY 227, SOCY 284, SOCY 305 and SOCY 389 (W19), SOCY 226, SOCY 306, SOCY 388 (F19), SOCY 227 (W20), SOCY 226, SOCY 284 and SOCY 306 (F20), PSYC 236 (W21), PSYC 251, SOCY 384 (S21), SOCY 226, SOCY 388 (F21), SOCY 227 (W22)??after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to waive the ruling that you be ??Required to Withdraw for One Year?. I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and your strong academic plan. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.
To grant your request to drop SOCY 227, SOCY 284, SOCY 305 and SOCY 389 (W19), SOCY 226, SOCY 306, SOCY 388 (F19) after the academic deadline due to the impacts of your extenuating circumstances on these classes as confirmed by the documentation that you supplied. I acknowledge that you were not receiving professional support at that time. Your grades in these classes will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript and will no longer be included within the calculation of your GPA.
To deny your request to drop SOCY 226 (F17), GNDS 215, SOCY 227 (W18), SOCY 226, SOCY 388 (F18), and SOCY 227 (W22)??after the academic deadline as I see that you were able to successfully complete other classes during these terms despite the impacts of your extenuating circumstances. As your appeal didn??t demonstrate a correlation between the impacts of your extenuating circumstances with your lower grades in these classes, I cannot grant this request.
To deny your request to drop SOCY 227 (W20), SOCY 226, SOCY 284 and SOCY 306 (F20), PSYC 236 (W21), PSYC 251, SOCY 384 (S21), SOCY 226, SOCY 388 (F21) after the academic deadline as the documentation that you supplied indicates that you were receiving professional support for the management of your extenuating circumstances during these terms. I want to remind you that it is the student??s responsibility to evaluate their academic progress during week 7 of the term and make sure to drop courses that they have fallen behind in or find the material too difficult in by week 8 of the term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
As you continue in your course of study it is your responsibility to take steps for the successful completion of your program and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. These are some strategies that I strongly encourage you to consider:
Choose courses carefully. As you know, achieving a higher grade in a repeated course will improve your GPA. This course of action will help to ensure you will be in good academic standing and not at risk of being required to withdraw for three years.
Reflect on your program choice. Are you in the right plan for your interests and aptitudes? Your Academic Advisement Report in SOLUS will allow you to see your remaining requirements and help you plan out future courses.
