On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to receive Credit Standing in POLS 347 (Fall 2019) and POLS 392 (Winter 2020). Members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (Faculty member), Ivan Dimitrov (Faculty member), and Emma Farrell (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal to receive Credit Standing in POLS 347 (Fall 2019) and POLS 392 (Winter 2020), finding her decision reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record. I wish to emphasize that the Board appreciates the importance of this decision to you, and I want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal in our discussion.
We recognize the severity of the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that the documents included in your appeal consists mainly of statements that fall under the category of ??self report? and could not speak directly to the impact of extenuating circumstances on your academic ability in these two courses. Similarly, the two notes provided by a physician, respectively dated May 19, 2022, and March 20, 2022, do not provide clear evidence of the connection between the timing of the extenuating circumstances and your academic performance.
The Board is sympathetic to your case and wants to command your resilience and academic achievement in face of adversity. We would also like to encourage you to put health and wellness supports in place for your upcoming academic year in graduate studies.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, this is the last step in the appeal process for this matter, since your ability to progress to the next level is not affected by this decision.
