Dear Soumesh Roy:
I have carefully considered your request to drop MATH 112 (W 2022) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
I acknowledge that you experienced a family-related extenuating circumstance during the 2022 Winter term however I want to remind you that students were made aware during the 2021 Fall term about the return to in-person study. This Winter term change from remote to on-campus learning was not unexpected. It is my understanding that you had connected with your instructors early in the Winter term and were informed of the in-person requirements of these classes at that time. As your appeal demonstrates that you were aware that you couldn??t complete these classes remotely before the academic drop deadline, I cannot grant this request.
This is a disappointing decision I am sure but let me remind you that if a student repeats a course, the low grade is excluded from their grade point average and the higher grade is included, which would mean there would be no long-term negative impact on your GPA.
Going forward, I suggest that you assess your progress in each of your classes during week 7 of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by the week 8 deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
