I am sorry to have read of the circumstances outlined in your appeal and I have carefully considered your request to drop HIST 241 (W 2022) after the drop date and receive Credit standing in HIST 124 (FW 2021/22) and HIST 223 (W 2022). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. To grant your request to drop HIST 241 based the circumstances outlined.
2. To grant your request to for Credit standing in HIST 124 based on your extenuating circumstances and the input received from your instructor confirming the course requirements were completed and the learning outcomes achieved.
3. To deny your request for Credit standing in HIST 223 since, according to your instructor, you did not complete all the course deliverables. The instructor of this course did note that she is willing to allow you to complete the outstanding course requirements. To pursue this offer, you should reach out to Professor Sen Chowdhury within the next 14 days to discuss this.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.2. states that, Credit standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed all of the work in the course including the final examination, and achieved a passing grade in the course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, earned a substantially lower grade than might have been expected, normally a grade of C or lower.? Credit standing is only granted in cases where there are well documented and unforeseen extenuating circumstances outside of a student??s control. The Regulations note that the integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Sophie, for your information, if a student repeats a course, the higher grade will be included with the GPA and the lower grade will be excluded.
Going forward, I encourage you to carefully evaluate your progress in your courses prior to the week 8 drop deadline and if you have fallen behind in your course work, or your health is impacting your studies in a negative way, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.
