Dear Nav Brar:

I have carefully considered your appeal to add PSYC 236, ANAT 100 and ARTH 250 (F22) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.

As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s ability to add a course within the deadline was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond their control.

The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.

Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student??s control and debilitating to their overall academic performance. As you know, your appeal was not supported by documentation to confirm that an extenuating circumstance had impacted your ability to add courses in SOLUS before the posted deadlines. I want to remind you that your Enrollment Appointment began at 2pm on July 20, 2022.

I acknowledge that you are close to completing your degree requirements and I understand that this is a disappointing decision. According to your Academic Progress Report in SOLUS, you require 3.0 units from PSYC at the 200-level or above; STAT_Options; COGS 300/3.0; COMM 352//3.0; INTS 306/3.0 and so I suggest that you enroll in a course to satisfy this requirement for the 2023 Winter term.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean??s decision to the Board of Studies, information and deadlines can be found at www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on ??Board of Studies?). You may contact the Office of the University Ombudsperson for information about student rights and responsibilities https://www.queensu.ca/ombuds/appeal-process/procedural-fairness and guidance on policy and procedure by visiting their website at https://www.queensu.ca/ombuds/.

Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policyE and Rules of Procedure for USAB https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy/usab-rules-of-procedure are Queen??s university Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.??

Sincerely,

Jenn Stephenson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Academic)
