On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Board of Studies (Board) reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to add BIOL 103, ANAT 100, and LAW 207 after the deadline. Members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Scott-Morgan Straker (Faculty member), Karine Bertrand (Faculty member), and Emma Farrell (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your appeal to add the three courses after the deadline, finding her decision reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record. I wish to emphasize that the Board appreciates the importance of this decision to you, and I want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal in our discussion.
We recognize the severity of the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that the documents included in your appeal as well as your oral statements do not provide clear evidence on how your experience prevented you from enrolling during the time between your enrolment appointment (on July 18) and the enrolment deadline (on September 19). We also want to point out that the regulation regarding the addition of a course after the academic deadline must have the support of the instructors. In your case, the instructors of ANAT 100 and of LAW 207 do not support a late enrolment, and the instructor of BIOL 103 has serious reservations about your enrolment in his course at a late date. In agreement with the Associate Dean and your instructors, the Board think that a late enrolment could be detrimental to your success in the courses and could hinder your progress toward your degree.
The Board is sympathetic to your case and would like to encourage you to put health and wellness supports in place for a successful return to Queen??s in the winter term. We would also like to emphasize the importance of respecting academic deadlines.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, this is the last step in the appeal process for this matter, since your ability to progress to the next level is not affected by this decision.
