Dear Caroline,
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive your requirement to withdraw for 1 year. After reviewing your appeal, I am sympathetic to the number of incidents that occurred. I can also see that you were receiving counselling support in May and June. For these reasons I am compelled to waive your requirement to withdraw and allow you to return to studies as of January 2023.
I have granted this appeal based on the severity of your extenuating circumstances and since you have sought out help from your counsellor. But I need to warn you that the appeals process is not meant to be used to manage ongoing problems. The Appeal process is designed for students who encounter problems, or whose problems become acute, after the drop deadline. Instead, I would encourage you to work with your Counsellor and consider registering with QSAS if you have not done so already. A QSAS Advisor can help you manage both your health and your academics. This could include taking a lighter course load and would include evaluating the impact of your health on your studies prior to week 8 of term. If you have fallen behind or you are not performing in courses to your satisfaction, you should drop courses by the drop deadline.
Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Your progression will be assessed again after you have attempted another 18 units. I urge you to take advantage of the resources above and that your grades are stronger to avoid a requirement to withdraw for 3 years.
I see from your letter that there may have been some confusion around when and how your academic progression is assessed. I would recommend meeting with an Academic Advisor to better understand the progression process. If you would like to book an appointment with an academic advisor, please login to our online booking system. Appointments will open on a rolling 72 hour basis, so please check back regularly for new openings.
