I have carefully considered your appeal for Credit Standing in BCHM 218 (W22) After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
The information that I received from your instructor indicates that your grades were fairly consistent in BCHM 218 throughout the Winter term and I see that you were able to complete other courses to high standards in the same term.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however, the documentation that you supplied indicates that your extenuating circumstances began on December 14, 2021, before the 2022 Winter term had started. I acknowledge that you enrolled in BCHM 218 during week 2 of the Winter term however your appeal request indicates that you recognized the difficulty level of this course and that you chose to remain in the class past the drop deadline despite being impacted by extenuating circumstances.
Going forward, please know that a student can request short term academic consideration if they need more time to complete a component or had to miss a class as a result of an illness or other personal circumstance. Please also know that repeating courses is a recommended strategy for students who are concerned about their GPA. When repeating a course, both attempts will appear on your transcript but only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your GPA.
