I have carefully considered your appeal to receive an extension of an incomplete grade in FILM 218 (W21) and to drop FILM 339 (S21) and FILM 455 (F21) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your documentation and the information supplied by your Department, I have decided the following:
To grant your request for an extension of an incomplete grade in FILM 218 (W21) due to the support that you have received from your department. I recognize that you have completed all of the work in the class and that your department has offered to grade the outstanding work and update your grade accordingly. It is your responsibility to connect with the Department of Film and Media to make the appropriate arrangements.
To grant your request to drop FILM 339 (S21) as I acknowledge from the documentation that you supplied that you first connected with health care supports on August 2, 2021 which was after the drop deadline of this term. Your grade in this class will be replaced with a ??DR? notation on your transcript.
To deny your request to drop FILM 455 (F21) after the academic deadline. As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am certainly sympathetic to your situation and realize that this is a disappointing decision however, the documentation that you supplied confirms that you had received a diagnosis of your health-related circumstances and were undergoing some treatment before the academic drop deadline of this term. I want to remind you that it is the student??s responsibility to assess the impacts of extenuating circumstances on their academics before the deadline to drop a course each term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course before the deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
If you are concerned with the impact that your grade in FILM 455 (F21) has on your cumulative GPA, you may want to consider repeating this course. When a student repeats the same course code, both attempts will appear on their transcript however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of their GPA.
