I have carefully considered your petition to drop ITAL 111 (F19), WRIT 125 and SPAN 111 (S22) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To deny your request to drop ITAL 111 (F19) past the academic deadline. As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
While I acknowledge that you were connected with health care supports in October of 2019, the documentation that you supplied does not suggest any academic impacts of extenuating circumstances during the 2019 Fall term. I certainly empathize with your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however, I want to remind you that you have submitted other academic appeal requests since the 2019 Fall term ended that did not include a request to drop this class. Without clear and compelling documentation to confirm that an extenuating circumstance had a direct academic impact on your academic ability in ITAL 111 (F19), I cannot grant this request.
I want you to know that repeating courses is a recommended strategy if you are concerned about a lower grade impacting your grade point average. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.
To grant your request to drop WRIT 125 and SPAN 111 (S22) as the documentation that you supplied suggests academic impacts from your extenuating circumstances during the 2022 Summer term. I am also willing to allow you to drop DEVS 220 (S22) after the academic deadline as I acknowledge that your grades in this course would have also been impacted during that same term. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 15 business days of receiving this letter.
Going forward, I would suggest that you register with Queen??s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS), if you haven??t done so already, so that you can work with a Counsellor to help manage the impact of your health on your academics.
