I have carefully considered your petition to drop ANAT 215 (F22) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
While I acknowledge that you experienced side effects from a new medication during the 2022 Fall term, your petition letter suggests that your lab attendance was impacted well before the deadline to drop this class in November. The information that I received from the instructor of this course indicates that you had achieved low grades in some of the components, specifically in the month of October. I have denied this request because it is clear that you were aware of the academic impacts that your absences were having on your grades in ANAT 215 before the academic drop deadline. I want to remind you that it is the student??s responsibility to evaluate the impact of their health on their classes before the academic drop deadline each term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the ??Important Dates? section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision and I want to remind you that repeating courses is a recommended strategy if you are concerned about a lower grade impacting your grade point average. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.
