I have carefully considered your petition to drop HLTH 235, HLTH 230, BIOL 212 (W22), CLST 205 (S22), BIOL 300, BIOL 330, and BIOL 339 (F22) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to drop HLTH 235, HLTH 230, and BIOL 212 (W22). I want to commend you for utilizing Academic Consideration when you became ill with Covid-19 near the end of the 2022 Winter term. I have granted this request as I recognize the impacts that this illness had on your academic ability at that time. Your final grades in these classes will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript.
To deny your request to drop CLST 205 (S22), BIOL 300, BIOL 330 and BIOL 339 (F22) after the academic deadline. As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students?? records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student??s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and recognize that this is a difficult decision, however the documentation that you supplied indicates that your extenuating circumstances are chronic and do not provide a timeline nor suggest any specific academic impacts on the 2022 Summer and 2022 Fall courses that you are petitioning to drop. I want to remind you that it is the student??s responsibility to evaluate their academic progress during Week 7 of each term and make sure to drop courses that they have fallen behind in, or in which you find the material too difficult, by the Week 8 drop deadline.
Going forward, I want to remind you that Academic Consideration is a process for the university community to provide a compassionate response to assist students experiencing a short-term extenuating circumstance. While I see that you utilized this service in March, I don??t see any requests from you related to your 2022 Summer or 2022 Fall term courses. You can familiarize yourself with your consideration options at: https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/accommodations.
If you are concerned with the impact that this course has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however only the higher attempt will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
