Dear Mr. Hewitt:
I have carefully considered your appeal to drop CISC 454 (W 2013) past the academic deadline as well as receive Aegrotat standing in CISC 422 and SOFT 423 (W 2013). After reviewing your file I will grant your request to drop CISC 454 but I must unfortunately deny your request for Aegrotat standing in CISC 422 and SOFT 423.
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.2.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ The Appeal Regulations go on to stress that Aegrotat standing will only be granted under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond her control.
While your appeal does certainly describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, you have not completed enough work in CISC 422 or SOFT 423 to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. Professor Dean confirmed that you have completed 36 per cent of the required work for SOFT 423 and Professor Dingel confirmed that you have completed none of the required work for CISC 422. A minimum of 60 per cent of the course must be completed to be eligible for Aegrotat standing. However, given your circumstances I would be willing to allow you to drop these courses past the academic deadline instead. If you wish to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision letter to confirm your request. Once it has been received we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
