On Friday April 28, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to take more than 6.0 units of courses on a Letter of Permission in the 2022-2023 academic year. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Stephanie Dickey (Faculty member), Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (Faculty member), and Yara Hussein (Student representative). As you are aware, you also attended a portion of the meeting along with the Associate Dean (Academic), Jenn Stephenson. Haley Everson (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
After you and Dr. Stephenson left the meeting, the Board carefully considered the information from the oral statements along with the written submissions contained in the file, including your Academic Advisement Report and the letter from your potential employer, Sunrise Education. After this deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your request to take a course on a letter of permission in your fourth year, finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record.
The Board appreciates your concern regarding the timeline of your graduation, given your opportunity to join the job market in the spring. However, we agree with the Associate Dean that the criteria to grant an appeal to the regulation 3.3.1.7 (To request to Complete Any Part of the Third or Fourth Year of an Honours Degree Program at another University) could not be applied in your case, as your situation does not fall into the categories of extenuating circumstances or exceptional academic opportunity. During the meeting you also mentioned that your already enrolled and participated in the course at the University of New Brunswick. While we understand that you felt pressured by time, we want to draw your attention to the fact that students should not enrol in a course in the hope of retroactively getting a letter of permission through an appeal.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that we explored all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file.
In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision.
