Dear Thomas:

On Tuesday May 23, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson??s decision to deny your request to drop POLS 262 (Winter 2023) after the deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Troy Day (Faculty member), Stephanie Dickey (Faculty member), and Preston Harrison (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.

At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all the written submissions, including two supporting documents from your psychotherapist, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean??s decision to deny your request for a retroactive drop of POLS 262 (Winter 2023), finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty??s regulations and your academic record.

The Board recognizes the extenuating circumstances that you have experienced in the winter of 2023. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that the documentation provided asserts that this pertains to a chronic condition for which you are registered with QSAS, and that the onset of your circumstances was ahead of the drop deadline for that term.

The Board would like to remind you that students are expected to adhere to university drop dates and not persist in courses in which they have fallen behind, even when their academic performance is affected by extenuating circumstances.

We recognize the importance of this decision to you and want to assure you that we explored all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file.

In April 2021, the Queen??s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision.

On behalf of the Board of Studies, I would like to wish you every success as you pursue your educational and career goals.

Sincerely,

Johanne Bénard
Chair, Board of Studies
