I have carefully considered your petition to waive a petition deadline in relation to the 2023 Summer term add deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student??s control and debilitating to their academic performance.
I acknowledge that you experienced an extenuating circumstance that had impacted you during the 2023 Winter term however the documentation that you supplied didn??t speak to the 2023 Summer term that you are petitioning from. I want to let you know that Summer term courses are condensed and move quickly and instructors are not obligated to accommodate a student due to late enrolment. Adding a course this late into the Summer term would not be setting you up for academic success and there will be many opportunities to complete this course in the future.
I understand that this is a disappointing decision and I encourage you to meet with an Academic Advisor to create an academic plan to help you reach your goals. You can book this appointment through the Faculty of Arts and Science website at https://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/advising. Student Academic Success Services (SASS) https://sass.queensu.ca/ in Stauffer Library provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. SWS offers personal and counselling as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.
