I have carefully considered your appeal to drop ENGL 491 (F22) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under "extenuating circumstances." The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that their performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I was sorry to read about the circumstances that you experienced during the 2022 Fall term however, the documentation that you supplied dated May 14 indicates that your extenuating circumstances are chronic and have been impacting you before the term began. I also see that you were able to complete some courses to high standards despite the ongoing impacts of your extenuating circumstances. Please know that the petition process is not meant to be used to manage a chronic condition.
I am sympathetic to your situation and recognize that this is a difficult decision however, I also want to remind you of your past petition request from December of 2021 where you were warned that it is the student’s responsibility to evaluate their academic progress during Week 7 of each term and make sure to drop courses that they have fallen behind in, or in which they find the material too difficult, by the Week 8 drop deadline.
If you are concerned with the impact that this grade has on your grade point average, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.
