On Monday June 12, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson’s decision to deny your request to drop FILM 240 (Winter 2023) after the deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Brooke Cameron (Faculty member), James Mingo (Faculty member), and Therese de Rivera (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all the written submissions, including a letter from a health professional and a disability verification from QSAS, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean’s decision to deny your request for a retroactive drop of FILM 240 (Winter 2023), finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty’s regulations and your academic record.
While we recognize that the documents included in your file attests to your mental health issues, they do not present evidence for extenuating circumstances during the winter of 2023 that would have had an impact on your performance in FILM 240. As for the additional information you have provided with the appeal, it was not receivable as it was not documented and has not been mentioned in your petition. The Board agrees with the Associate Dean that it remains the student’s responsibility to manage their academics by requesting an academic consideration or by dropping a course by the late drop deadline in week 8.
We would also like to point out that your appeal does not meet Queen’s University grounds for appeal and that the Associate Dean is the appropriate decision maker for a petition.
The Board recognizes that this decision is disappointing to you. We would advise you to consider repeating FILM 240 and we remind you that only the best marks for this course will count towards your GPA.
In April 2021, the Queen’s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision.
