On June 27, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson’s decision to deny your request to drop CHEM 281 (Fall 2022) after the deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Christopher Ferrall (Faculty member), Kai Salomaa (Faculty member), and Preston Harrison (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all written submissions contained in the file, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean’s decision to deny your appeal to drop CHEM 281 (Fall 2022) after the deadline, finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty’s regulations and your academic record.
In your letter of appeal to the Board and in your earlier submission to the Associate Dean, you asserted that you found difficult to manage your classwork in all your courses and that you intended to drop CHEM 281 before the final exam. We understand that you could have misunderstood the procedure to drop the course. However, you did not provide any evidence for extenuating circumstances, and, furthermore, you did not claim that you experienced extenuating circumstances. The Board agrees with the Associate Dean that it makes you ineligible for a late drop and that it remains the student’s responsibility to manage their academics and, if needed, to drop a course by the deadline.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you. We would also like to reiterate the Associate Dean’s advice to consider repeating CHEM 281 and remind you that only the best mark for this course will count towards your GPA. We also encourage you to consider a lighter course load in the future to maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.9, which is required for an Honours degree.
In April 2021, the Queen’s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen’s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
