Dear Amber:

I am sorry to read in your petition letter that you have encountered challenges during the 2022/23 academic year, and I have carefully considered your request to drop ANAT 100, ECON 111, EMPR 100 and PHIL 151 (F 2022) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your petition, I have decided to grant your request. Please note that you cannot drop the A portion of a full year course late, so PSYC 100A was not considered in this petition. Please see Academic Regulation 4.3 for additional information related to that. For your information, the A portion of a course has no impact on your academic standing or GPA.

I have exercised some leniency in this decision since you were a first year student and did not provide documentation to support your petition. However, your letter adequately outlined your challenges, and since you did not take courses during Winter term 2023, it is clear to me that you did indeed have a difficult term.

Going forward, I recommend that you pause and evaluate your health and progress in your courses during week 7 of each term, and if you have fallen behind or your health is impacting your studies, you should drop courses by the week 8 drop deadline. The drop deadlines, as they have been outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Arts and Science web page, have been established by the Faculty of Arts and Science to ensure a fair and equitable treatment of all students at Queen's.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Note that any change in academic registration may impact government or private-firm student financial assistance eligibility and/or funding. Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
