Dear Caleb:

I am sorry to have read the extenuating circumstances outlined in your petition letter, and I have carefully considered your request to drop POLS 110 and MATH 126 (FW 2022-23) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request.

I have granted this petition based on your circumstances and the documentation provided, but I was particularly pleased to see the grades you earned in your summer term courses which were a good indicator for me of your potential success.

Going forward, you will be responsible for proactively managing life related challenges that may arise during the academic year, and you should carefully evaluate your progress in each of your courses during week 7 of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by week 8 of term. The drop deadlines, outlined in the “Important Dates” section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.

Another tool to manage your academics in addition to dropping a course by the drop date deadline is our Academic Consideration protocol. A student can request short term consideration if they need more time to complete an assignment or had to miss a class due to documented extenuating circumstances. Caleb, I strongly encourage you to follow through with your plan and work with a Staff Advisor in Athletics who can assist you with study skills and time management.

Please consult with the Student Awards Office, Office of the University Registrar, Gordon Hall, to understand the potential implications of changes to course or program registration and/or the consequences of not successfully completing the required course load.
