On July 12, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson’s decision to deny your request to receive Aegrotat Standing (AG) for ENGL 200 (Fall/Winter 2022-2023), ANAT 100, BIOL 102, and PHGY 170 (Winter 2023). Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Allison Goebel (Faculty member), Troy Day (Faculty member), and Amaiya Walters (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after thoroughly reviewing all written submissions contained in the file and careful thought and deliberation, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean’s decision to deny your request to receive Aegrotat Standing (AG) for ENGL 200 (Fall/Winter 2022-2023), ANAT 100, BIOL 102, and PHGY 170 (Winter 2023), finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty’s regulations and your academic record. We also support the Associate Dean’s decision to offer you instead an Incomplete standing (IN) for the courses and allow you to complete the outstanding courses requirements for these courses.
The Board acknowledges the severity of your health-related issues. Nonetheless, we agree with the Associate Dean that the expectation of a full recovery by the fall, as indicated by your doctor, in their letter from June 27, 2023, would allow you to complete the outstanding requirements for the four courses by the fall term or in a subsequent term if your medical condition requires it. We also welcome the Associate Dean’s endorsement of alternative arrangements for these assessments, as supported by your medical documentation.
We recognize the importance of this decision to you, and we truly sympathize with your situation. We encourage you to continue to seek support from your doctors and from your QSAS advisor and we want to assure you that every effort was made to explore all aspects of your appeal through discussion of your file.
In April 2021, the Queen’s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen’s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
