On July 12, the Board of Studies reviewed your appeal of Associate Dean (Academic) Jenn Stephenson’s decision to deny your request to drop MUSC 171, EMPR 200, and BADR 101 (Winter 2023) after the deadline. Board members present that day were Johanne Bénard (Chair), Allison Goebel (Faculty member), Troy Day (Faculty member), and Amaiya Walters (Student representative). Pamela Briand (Arts and Science resource staff) was also present.
At this meeting, after carefully reviewing all written submissions contained in the file, the Board voted to uphold the Associate Dean’s decision to deny your appeal to drop MUSC 171, EMPR 200, and BADR 101 (Winter 2023) after the deadline, finding it reasonable in light of the Faculty’s regulations and your academic record.
We agree with the Associate Dean that the petitions and appeals process at Queen’s is a document-based system and that decisions are made based on information provided by documents that attest to extenuating circumstances. Since you did not provide any documentation regarding extenuating circumstances that would have impacted your academic abilities in the winter of 2023, we consider that the courses taken in that term are ineligible for late drop. We would also like to indicate that since you passed MUSC 171 and BADR 101, theses courses could not be considered for a late drop.
The Board is sympathetic with your situation, and we would like to reiterate the Associate Dean’s advice to consider repeating courses to mitigate the impact of a Fail on your cumulative GPA. We also encourage you to consider a lighter course load in the future to maintain a cumulative GPA of 1.9, which is required for an Honours degree.
In April 2021, the Queen’s University Senate released a new appeals policy, which you can read here: https://www.queensu.ca/secretariat/policies/senate/student-academic-appeals-policy. According to this new policy, the Board of Appeals is the last step in the appeal process for this matter since your ability to progress to the next level has not been affected by this decision. Please also note that Student Academic Appeals Policy (SAAP) or Rules of Procedure for USAB are Queen’s University Senate approved appeal policies. In the event that an inconsistency arises between these policies and Arts & Science regulations, SAAP and USAB will supersede.
