Dear Maria Habash:
I have carefully considered your petition for an Extension of an Incomplete Grade in HIST 109 (W23). After reviewing your file and the information that I received from your instructor, I have decided to deny your request.
Academic Regulation 10.3.4 states that “Incomplete standing (IN) is a temporary designation reserved for a course in which a student who, because of extenuating circumstances beyond their control, has not completed all term work for a course or requests permission to defer the writing of a final examination. The student must have participated actively in the class and only one or two elements of the course work have not been completed. Students with extenuating circumstances who have been unable to complete the majority of the work in a class should consider a petition to drop a class after the deadline rather than requesting an incomplete grade in the class.”
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a disappointing decision however the information that I received from your instructor confirms that the majority of the course remains outstanding as you have only completed 40% of the components in HIST 109 (W23) to date. As too much work is outstanding, you are not eligible for an Extension of an Incomplete in this course and I cannot grant this request.
I am however, willing to allow you to drop HIST 109 (W23) after the academic deadline due to the timeline, severity and academic impacts of your extenuating circumstances during the 2023 Winter term as confirmed by the documentation that you suppled. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this letter and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
I want to remind you that repeating courses is a recommended strategy if you are concerned about a lower grade impacting your grade point average. When repeating the exact same course, both grades remain on your transcript but only the higher one is included within your cumulative GPA.
