I have carefully considered your petition to take more than 6.0 units of courses on an International Letter of Permission during the 2023/2024 academic year. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
The Academic Petitions and Appeals Regulation 1.1 at https://www.queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/appeal-regulations/ stress that petitions and appeals are only granted where there are significantly extenuating circumstances, which would merit the waiving of a particular Faculty regulation or decision. Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond a student’s control and debilitating to their academic performance. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students’ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student’s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
I am sympathetic to your situation and understand that this is a difficult decision, however I have denied your request as financial circumstances are not grounds for a petition.
I want to remind you of Academic Regulation 14.4 which states that “A student in Level 3 or 4 may request a Letter of Permission to transfer up to 6.0 units from another post-secondary institution during the academic year”. Going forward, you may want to consider requesting a Letter of Permission to transfer 6.0 units of electives from Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM) and taking 3.0 units of electives through Arts and Science Online at Queen’s University so that you can meet your degree requirements in time for your desired graduation date.
